About the Initiative
A permanent bridge between media and security.
The Media, Peace and Security Initiative (MPSI) was born from a simple but urgent observation: that the relationship between media, security institutions and peacebuilding actors in Africa is too often defined by suspicion, misunderstanding and missed opportunity. MPSI exists to change that.
The roots of MPSI lie in original research conducted at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) on the role of media in conflict resolution — research that revealed a structural gap at the heart of Africa's peace and security architecture. Journalists covering conflict rarely had the tools to do so responsibly. Security actors rarely engaged the media as partners in prevention. And the platforms for meaningful dialogue between these two worlds were almost entirely absent.
The response to the first dialogue was clear: this was not a one-off conversation. It was the beginning of a movement.
Our Vision
An Africa where media and security actors work together with trust, shared understanding and mutual accountability — to prevent conflict and protect peace.
Our Mission
To build the capacity, platforms and partnerships that position media as an active contributor to conflict prevention, early warning and the strengthening of peaceful, informed societies across West Africa.
Our story
From research, to dialogue, to an institutional partnership
The Research
A Structural Gap Revealed
Original research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) on the role of media in conflict resolution revealed a structural gap at the heart of Africa's peace and security architecture: journalists rarely had the tools to cover conflict responsibly, security actors rarely engaged the media as partners, and platforms for dialogue between the two worlds were almost entirely absent.
2020
The Conversation Begins
KAIPTC and Kingdom Concepts Consult (KCC) convened the first Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Media and Security ahead of Ghana's general elections — bringing together journalists, security institutions and electoral actors for a structured, high-level conversation that had never taken place before.
2024
A Landmark Gathering
In October 2024, the second edition of the Dialogue was convened at KAIPTC under the theme Safeguarding Peace Before, During and After Elections: The Role of Media and Security Actors — bringing together Ghana's Minister of Interior, the Inspector General of Police, the Electoral Commission Chairperson, AU ECOSOCC and the Ghana Journalists Association in the most significant gathering of its kind in the sub-region.
2024
The Partnership Formalised
That same year, KAIPTC and KCC signed a Memorandum of Understanding, establishing the Media, Peace and Security Initiative as the joint institutional framework for their ongoing collaboration.
What we do
Three interconnected areas of work
01
Capacity Building
We train journalists, editors and media practitioners in peace journalism, conflict-sensitive reporting, digital verification and early warning principles — equipping them with practical tools for responsible reporting in complex, high-stakes environments.
02
Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue
We convene structured platforms that bring media practitioners, security institutions, public policymakers, peacebuilding organisations and researchers together to address the challenges that shape public trust, information integrity and peaceful societies. Our dialogue series has become a landmark convening in Ghana's peace and security calendar.
03
Research & Knowledge Production
We produce evidence-based resources — conflict analyses, toolkits, programme evaluations and policy briefs — that advance understanding of the media-peace-security nexus and inform programming across the sub-region.
Our institutional framework
Anchored in a centre of excellence
MPSI is anchored in one of Africa's most respected peace and security institutions. KAIPTC — recognised by ECOWAS and the African Union as a centre of excellence for peace support, conflict prevention and security governance — provides the institutional credibility, research capacity and training infrastructure that distinguishes MPSI from other media development programmes.
Kingdom Concepts Consult brings programme leadership, media and communications expertise, and the stakeholder networks built through years of engagement in Ghana's peace and security landscape.
Together, and under the formal framework of a signed MOU, KAIPTC and KCC are committed to advancing MPSI as a long-term, institutionally embedded programme — with ambitions that extend across ECOWAS and the broader African continent.
Alignment with continental agendas
MPSI's work aligns with the African Union's Agenda 2063, specifically Moonshot 4: Africa Resolves Conflicts Peacefully.
It also aligns with the AU Peace and Security Council's mandate on early warning and preventive diplomacy under Article 6(b) of the PSC Protocol.
We are building something that Africa has long needed — a permanent, structured bridge between the people who report on conflict and the institutions that work to prevent it. We invite you to be part of it.
Be part of it.
We invite you to join a permanent, structured bridge between media and peacebuilding.
